BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION WASH DATA

More than 2.5 billion people lack access to proper sanitation and waste treatment facilities leading to dehydration & death

  • South Asia, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, India, Africa
  • 1.5 million children die annually from food & drinking water polluted by human waste
  • 200 million people in China don’t have access to flushing toilets
  • The world needs 1 billion toilets
  • Human waster & open defecation major sources of waterborne diseases
  • Biochemical oxygen demand [BOD] from human waste into receiving water is a threat to biodiversity

Cause & effect of water contamination

  • Cholera kills: Caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. People become infected after eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by the faeces of infected persons.
  • Guinea Worm cripples: Guinea worm disease is a debilitating and painful infection caused by a large roundworm found in contaminated water. The worm penetrates the stomach, makes its way to the skin, and after growing to a length of 3 feet, emerges from the body through a painful blister.
  • Trachoma blinds: Trachoma is an infection of the eyes and is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness.

It occurs where there is limited access to clean water, slowly scarring the inside of the eyelid and eventually the cornea.

India: Rural villagers will pay 100-200 rupees per month for a satellite dish but they do not have a toilet. “Untouchables” have been cleaning toilets for 5000 years.. Carrying waste in a bucket on their heads. When it rains the waste runs over them. Half a million are still cleaning night soil. When girls openly defecate they are open to abuse from men. A girls was raped by 4 people when she went outside to defecate in the evening. So the entire day and night they need to control the call of nature.
